Captain Lewis's Experiment

July 18, 1805. Captain Lewis is very upset because his experimental boat that was made from iron but it didn't work. It was about 36 feet long. We had the animal hides all dried, and the water sealant that was made from a tree sap. we had assembled it and we let it go and it was in the water for about 5 minutes before every seem in the ship came apart and it went to the bottom of the river. For the rest of the day we tried to do everything we could to make Captain Lewis happy. The day after that we buried it in the ground.

The Fork in the River

Monday, June 3, 1805. Today we have to stop because there is a fork in the river and we don't know which way to go. The Captains are going to split us in two and one groups going to go down one of the rivers and the other is going to go down the other. We all think the muddy looking one is the Missouri River, except for the Captains. They think that the other River is the Missouri River because it is clear and that mountain water should be clear. I think its the other river because the whole way down the Missouri the Missouri as been murky and muddy.

Grizzly bear

April 29, 1805. Today we killed a Grizzly bear. It doesn't sound that amazing, but it took many multiple shots from a rifle to kill it. They are very hard to kill. There was two of them in camp. one ran and we shot it a couple of times and it just kept on running. eventually we killed both of them. I hope i never have to get close to one, especially while not when it is standing up on its hind legs.

Fort Mandan

Captain Lewis and Captain Clark have asked us to build a Fort to stay at for the winter of 1804. The Fort is going to be called Fort Mandan. It is very tiring to build so I can't wait for it to be done. It is on the north side of the river. Right now I'm working on building the two rows of chinked log cabins. Some of the men are working on a palisade fence of logs that is going to surround the fort.

Meeting the Teton Sioux

September 25, 1804. We met with the Teton Sioux. They stole John Colter's horse and we were instructed to fight them if necessary. This morning three chiefs and a lot of their warriors arrived. They gave us gifts and meat, and we gave each of the leaders a medal, and we gave them a cocked hat, and a scarlet military cloak. they were not pleased so we took on board the Keelboat and we gave them some of our whiskey. They refused to get off the boat when asked. then we pointed guns at them and they pointed arrows at us. I was really scared. Then the chief Black Buffalo worked it out.

Keelboat

May 14, 1804. The keelboat was the one of the boat that is going on up Missouri with the us. It was a durable craft that was fifty-five feet long and eight feet wide, and has a draft of about three feet. The cabin in the back had a canvas awning, a fore castle, and a thirty one foot hold. In the boat there is storage lockers on both side of the ship. The boatmen can use them as walkways. The boat had benches in the middle that can seat about twelve oarsman on each side. The boat has a thirty-two foot mast which can be lowered because it is hinged. On the mast was a mainsail and a foresail. You can sail, row, or pole the keelboat.
